Abstract. European pears ‘Conference’ and ‘Bojniczanka’ grafted on quince S and Asian pears ‘Chojuro’ and ‘Nijisseiki’ grafted on Pyrus communis, were planted in 2002 at the distance 4 × 0.8 m to be trained as cordons and 4 × 1.2 m to be trained as spindles and ‘V’ system. During
5 years from planting cordon trees grew weaker and produced less yield per tree than spindle and ‘V’ trained trees, but higher yield per ha.

Summary
European pears ‘Conference’ and ‘Bojniczanka’ grafted on quince S and Asian pears ‘Chojuro’ and ‘Nijisseiki’ grafted on Pyrus communis, were planted in 2002 at the distance 4 × 0.8 m to be trained as cordons and 4 × 1.2 m to be trained as spindles and ‘V’ system. During 5 years from planting cordon trees grew weaker and produced less yield than spindle and ‘V’ trained trees. The yield calculated per ha was however the highest from cordons. Planting and training systems had no influence on fruit quality. Hand fruit thinning increased mean fruit weight and percentage of large fruit.
